I am a Chiropractor from Wilton Manors, Ft. Lauderdale where there is a proud community that is proactive about their health. There are a great variety of health care providers, offering alternative healthcare services to complement the current standard of care. However, research shows the chiropractic adjustment results with increased immune system function and may be the best option of them all. This is vital information for everyone, but especially important for individuals living with HIV who strive to remain in control of their immune health.
The Dentate Ligament Theory by John D. Grostic, (one of Chiropractic’s best scientists) was the basis for a study performed over a six month duration, measuring the effects of specific upper cervical adjustments on the immune system and CD4 cell counts in HIV positive individuals. 1
Dr. Mint’s last blog article addressed the safety of chiropractic adjustments to the upper neck. From that blog entry we understand why the condition of your neck (upper cervical spine) is crucial to your overall health.
Similarly, the CD4 cell is a major player in your immune system and it acts as a quarterback, communicating and directing action with other types of immune cells, to fight off invading infectious materials. “Normal blood values are usually expressed as the number of cells per microliter or equivalently, cubic millimeter, mm3; with normal values for CD4 cells being 500-1200 cells/mm3.” 2 Unfortunately for individuals living with “advanced stages of HIV infection, loss of functional CD4 cells leads to the symptomatic stage of infection known as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).” 3
The incredible thing about this research study (mentioned above) are the results and what this means for someone with a compromised immune system. This study published in the Chiropractic Research Journal (1994; 3: 32-39) demonstrates a 48% increase in CD4 cells to individuals receiving regular chiropractic care (treating their upper neck alone) for a six-month period. In comparison, the control group which did not get adjusted, experienced an overall decline of 8% in CD4 cell count, during the same amount of time. To re-emphasize the vital role of CD4 in the immune system, let us review:
“CD4+ T helper cells are white blood cells that are an essential part of the human
immune system. They are often referred to as CD4 cells, T-helper cells, or T4 cells.
They are called helper cells because one of their main roles is to send signals to
other types of immune cells, including CD8 killer cells, which then destroy the
I urge anyone with a health condition, especially if it involves a compromised immune system, to implement a chiropractic care regiment of regular adjustments (weekly basis) to improve their immune function and overall health.
