I am a Chiropractor from Wilton Manors, Ft. Lauderdale where there is a proud community that is proactive about their health. Similarly, the CD4 cell is a major player in your immune system and it acts as a quarterback, communicating and directing action with other types of immune cells, to fight off invading infectious materials. “Normal blood values are usually expressed as the number of cells per microliter or equivalently, cubic millimeter, mm3; with normal values for CD4 cells being 500-1200 cells/mm3.” 2 Unfortunately for individuals living with “advanced stages of HIV infection, loss of functional CD4 cells leads to the symptomatic stage of infection known as the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).” 3
The incredible thing about this research study (mentioned above) are the results and what this means for someone with a compromised immune system. This study published in the Chiropractic Research Journal (1994; 3: 32-39) demonstrates a 48% increase in CD4 cells to individuals receiving regular chiropractic care (treating their upper neck alone) for a six-month period. In comparison, the control group which did not get adjusted, experienced an overall decline of 8% in CD4 cell count, during the same amount of time. To re-emphasize the vital role of CD4 in the immune system, let us review:

Chiropractic care has a tremendous effect on body performance. Getting adjusted is like updating or upgrading our own internal software. Each “crack” strengthens the nerve system improving the connection and quality of information transmitted across the wires.
This is important because the nerve system controls healing in the body. The body relies on a complete communication circuit along the nerve pathways between the brain and other parts of the body. For example, my brain sends a message to move my fingers to type and my finger relays a response back to the brain each time; all while thousands of other processes are coordinated by the brain. Imagine the level of efficiency and multitasking that is required, since a few hundred of those happening every second are keeping you alive.
The chiropractic adjustment focuses on the spine, but may include aligning other joints of the body which have been off balance forcing compensation, often times creating abnormal stress patterns that cause pain, discomfort, and other symptoms. These compensations commonly causes wear and tear micro-injuries, keeping the body in a state of stress and ultimately preventing you from healing properly.
It is certainly possible to experience relief from one adjustment, many of my patients have reported so in the past. However, patients involved in a trauma (eg. car accident, slip & fall) can develop chronic stress patterns and experience flare ups whenever they aggravate their condition. Therefore, it is imperative that patients classified as injured follow a care schedule, based on their exam findings and the Chiropractor’s recommendations.
Having said that, Wellness patients (interested in maintaining health already achieved) are in a different league. I give them the freedom to monitor themselves after their first adjustment and follow up with me no more than 7 days after. Typically after a week, you know if you need another adjustment or not. I had the opportunity to use my pair of Vibes for the first time at two very different types of concerts, on back to back nights. The first one was a rap concert, the Dazed and Blazed tour; the second was Taylor Swift’s Reputation Stadium tour. I anxiously anticipated the first concert, not because the performers are some of my favorite artists, but because of my proximity to the speakers. Typically after a concert without Vibes, my ears feel injured with symptoms including: ringing in my ears, distorted hearing, deafness, dizziness, headache. I was amazed that I had absolutely none of these problems.
Another thing I typically worry about at concerts is pain in my ears because the decibel (db) level is overwhelming (eg. 95-110). Hearing damage starts to occur at 85 db and above and can happen in 15 minutes or less at levels of 100 decibels! Let me tell you, the bass at the rap concert was so strong that my lungs were vibrating to the point it made me cough. All the while I felt like I couldn’t breathe normally, I was comforted knowing my ears were protected.
When you receive your Vibes, it comes with earbuds in three sizes. I used the standard size. The earbus fit perfectly and at times I completely forgot I was using them. This Documentary was a complete eye opening experience. Of course I am aware of the deep levels of corruption in the pharmaceutical industry, but the medical device industry (which this film is about) is a leading competitor and is possibly even more powerful and dangerous.
The film documents adverse reactions to FDA approved medical devices and follows the plea of support group administrators and Doctors, to take these dangerous products off the market. Despite the thousands of people reporting harmful effects, and Congressional support, companies like: Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, DaVinci, and Stryker refuse to take the devices off the U.S. market, while continuing to defend their claim--"the benefit outweighs the risk".
One of the most harmful devices, particularly to women has been-- Essure sterilization (birth control) and it is implanted in each fallopian tube. The testimonial was horrific--medical device reps would watch as the procedure was performed and if the device was not installed correctly, women were found to have multiple devices implanted (as if the patient was disposable)! The effects these failed devices have on the individuals and their families are disastrous! It was really difficult to watch. However, it is inspiring to see someone who personally experienced so much pain, to fight these mega powerful industries, in the hopes of saving so many others who remain at risk.
It was particularly difficult to watch this one woman suffering from a failed distraction of the Essure device, trying to get relief from severe headaches. You could see the frustration in her face, as she pulled harder and harder tractioning her neck. As a Chiropractor all I wanted to do was try to help her feel better.

It makes me really sad that the FDA does not have the best interest of the people in mind, because millions of dollars are spent Lobbying officials in Washington D.C. to vote in favor of the industry, rather than protect the people.

The take away from this article is, please get second opinions when it comes to any invasive procedure, no matter how minimally invasive or effective the Doctor claims for it to be. One of the alarming facts mentioned in the film was the lack of knowledge by Doctors regarding the product approval process via the FDA; not to mention the tainted scientific data from testimonials and surveys related to device efficacy.
After all, it took an orthopedic surgeon acquiring Cobalt poisoning from the metal-on-metal hip replacement he opted for, to raise awareness about this dangerous medical device. Statistics reveal there are currently 10 Million people with hip replacements using these materials. The condition results in cognitive defects and psychosis, yet is treatable. The surgeon who suffered with toxic levels of Cobalt could have easily been misdiagnosed with Alzheimer's or Dementia. How many of our friends and family members are dying or misdiagnosed with untreatable diseases because these adverse reactions are kept quiet by influence of the giants in the medical device industry.

I had a great time with friends and connected with new people at the sunset beach yoga class. Lisa Pumper created this group and leads as (in my opinion) the best instructor, making you feel confident with your practice at any level. She especially focuses on spinal hygiene throughout the class, which I love! What a great way to recover from the last week and refresh your mind and body for the upcoming challenges ahead.

Many cereals on the market, specifically children’s cereals contain levels of sugar that are unhealthy for daily human consumption. In fact, some children’s cereals are 50% sugar in total weight! The highest percentage cereal by weight containing sugar are listed in Table 2 of the website below:
You wouldn’t eat a spoonful of sugar, like the Mary Poppins song recommends. It would be difficult to watch someone do this, but it happens millions of times per day in America.
Half the recommended limit for daily consumption of sugar in children is in one serving of cereals like: Kellogg’s Golden Smacks or Post’s Golden Crisp.
Adults, especially parents need to be aware of this, to limit overdosing on recommended daily sugar intake before breakfast is over. Start your day off right with foods that don’t contain added sugar, preservatives, or artificial ingredients.

Today, I would like to encourage you to incorporate a little more water into your lifestyle. There are several ways it can be used to benefit your health and I will give examples that relate to–

I decided to share my feelings on the importance of a pillow and why I recommend it as a step for achieving wellness.
My 5 Health Essentials are necessary to incorporate into your lifestyle and to practice weekly, to achieve wellness. They are:
Recovery is synonymous with healing. We all can relate to the gratification we get from a great night of rest. Similarly, recovery is a household phrase used to discuss exercise and the requirement to rest your body, allowing muscles/ muscle groups that were stressed during workouts, a chance to recover.
Most adult patient I have come across, have an underlying issue with their health. Surprise, it is issues with their sleep cycle!
Many times, pain interfering with sleep is the culprit for why we decide to visit our Doctor and add this to our busy schedules in the first place.
While researching the prevalence of this health issue, I discovered an alarming statistic from the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) website.
“Almost 20 percent of all serious car crash injuries in the general population are associated with driver sleepiness, independent of alcohol effects. Further, sleep loss and sleep disorders have a significant economic impact. The high estimated costs to society of leaving the most prevalent sleep disorders untreated are far more than the costs that would be incurred by delivering adequate treatment.
Hundreds of billions of dollars a year are spent on direct medical costs associated with doctor visits, hospital services, prescriptions, and over-the-counter drugs. Compared to healthy individuals, individuals suffering from sleep loss, sleep disorders, or both are less productive, have an increased health care utilization, and an increased likelihood of accidents.
The issue is not just lack of rest, it is important to get quality rest, so your body can recover as efficiently as possible.
Primarily, the biggest problem with lack of proper rest is, it affects cognitive function. For example, medical errors were reduced in hospitals that decreased hours which interns were required to be on call.
Another reason why proper rest is difficult to attain is because of the increase in distractions with technology. For example, adolescents who stay up late on their phones, watching tv, or using the computer are suffering academically.
Sleep apnea, work related injuries, and motor vehicle accidents are trending as Americans with lack of proper rest grow too tired to function.
Can you see the threat? This is dangerous and getting out of hand.
We need to improve our quality of Life as it relates to the Health Essential of Recovery, to save our children and to save our community.
Rest Position = Level of Recovery:
The pillow is a great start. The D-core design (see link) promotes proper support of the cervical spine (neck) and is most efficient in the supine position (sleeping on your back). Sleeping on your side will work with this pillow, but I encourage you to refrain from this practice because it will lead to shoulder, rib, hip, and/or low back pain.
It’s important to understand the prone sleeping position (face down) is detrimental to your spinal alignment and will cause chronic muscle spasms, tension headaches, and generalized discomfort throughout the day.
Because the position we sleep in equals one-third of our lifetime, we need to develop healthy sleeping habits, to ensure improved quality of rest and recovery.
*Mint Life Hack:
It is difficult to switch from lying face down when sleeping, to the proper resting position (facing up). Therefore, I recommend using a body pillow and hugging it, while lying on your back to mimic the sensation of lying face down. Practice relaxation in this position, every night for at least ten minutes before going to sleep. Start by setting a timer on your phone for ten minutes and as your body adapts to relaxing in this position, you will learn to fall asleep and stay in this position while you sleep.
Do this for 30 days and review your previous entries every night. Eventually, you will see a pattern
Next step is to track your hours of sleep with a sleep log. Keep a journal next to your bed, write down what time you are lying in bed, to fall asleep. The goal of course is to fall asleep before the ten minute timer goes off and eventually no longer use it.
When you wake up and get out of bed in the morning, write down the time. Add notes for disruptions to your sleep, whether something woke you up, or you got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Also write down your initial thoughts on quality and rate how restful your night of sleep was out of 10. For example, a completely satisfying night of rest will equal 10/10. Alternatively, a horrible night of sleep with interruptions, tossing, and turning will equal 1/10. Each week, add your total and divide by 70 for your weekly sleep quality score percentage. If your score does not improve from one week to the next, discuss this with your Doctor. Let’s work together to find a healthy and attainable solution for you.
